You either die a hero or remain long enough to watch yourself becoming the villain” the movie says in The Dark Knight. In the present, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain once again, this time with Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong and the story is true to the comic-book storyline as well and brings back popular actress, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). There’s, of course, the wacky humour so unique to director Taika Waititi. Love and Thunder is a standalone film that does not match the quality of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however his stand-alone films have either missed the mark or have completely missed the mark. While the story of the origins of Thor (2011) was a decent start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a horrendous entry. Yet, any list of the top five MCU films would contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) without a doubt. Expectations were high before the release due to returning of the Hemsworth/Taika Warwick collaboration.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), God who seeks to destroy all gods attacks New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining up with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) as well as Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend and now Mighty Thor. This film is simple and straightforward, which marks an improvement from the previous Marvel movies. The performances are favorable. Hemsworth is the main character who is in trouble in her midlife. But Bale as well as Portman are both outstanding. For proof of Bale’s skills and his eminence, the pre-title credit sequence stands. Gorr could be the next Thanos for MCU which is in dire need of good supervillains and Bale brings in a certain creepiness to the character, but there’s not much of a lot more.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancerous ex-girlfriend. Marvel appears to be keen on handing over the mantles Hawkeye and Hulk to women characters. I was hoping that the Mighty Thor would be similar to the representation checklist. But the film does build on a heartwarming backstory for the astrophysicist, who gets to showcase her biceps in multiple scenes.
Marvel does its own flexing too, through all the cameos that are in the film. In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy team we also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also being portrayed as Hela and the director for an Asgardian play. Waititi, who has been directing since Ragnarok has directed Jojo, the Oscar-winning Rabbit, returns to his genre of choice once more. It’s funny to look at the likes of a pair of noisy goats and Korg’s narration about Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie is Old Spice’s spokesperson.
The main premise is that Thor seeks his Mjolnir but is afraid of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags are hilarious, however they’re at the expense of intense emotion. They also expose the superficial plot. Thor: Love and Thunder deals with a variety of love, ranging from a father-daughter bond to the complex love story of lovers who are not together… There’s the resemblance between Gorr losing his faith in his god, Rapu, and Thor becoming disillusioned with Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). There are all these ideas however…
There are many references to movies like Harry Potter and Interstellar, and also Easter eggs. A shot of Falligar the god of death is revealed, straight from comics. We can see Hemsworth in the classic Thor costumes that comic book fans will recognise. When Thor is seen in an argument with Zeus He gets to witness a tattoo saying “RIP Loki’ with the helmet of the trickster on Thor’s back. We are introduced to the villainous Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker appear to possess an independent mind and are able to control their own minds, it’s interesting to observe more weapons being revealed to be able to control people.
We saw this in Shang Chi’s ten rings along with Ms. Marvel’s amazing Bangle as well as the Ebony blade during the Eternals post-credits scene. The quote “Gods won’t empower you, but they will use the power of God to help you” from Marvel’s latest show, Moonknight, feels very real. A bit of Valkyrie’s loss in battle to her closest friend , as well as Korg falling for a Kronan man is also mentioned.
It is easy to think of Ragnarok’s colour palette in the first part, but much of the second part is set in the dark world of black and white. The action scenes in monochrome can be very satisfying however, it’s important to keep in mind.
Hemsworth as Thor will be here for a long time for the foreseeable future, and it’s an enormous relief for MCU people who’ve seen the first Avengers either sacrifice their lives, or hang up their boots.
